Courtesy of our good friends at HobbyLink Japan, we’ve been sent a toy from Mobile Fighter G Gundam to review. Specifically, the Robot Damashii God Gundam that’s on sale. In addition, to give the toy some context, we’ve also linked gameplay and anime footage of it in action at the end of the review.
G Gundam was the first of the alternate timeline Gundam series. Set in the Future Century it chronicled the events of the 13th Gundam Fight, where nations compete with their national Gundams for rule over the Earth. Into the fray enters Domon Kasshu representing Neo Japan. Initially Domon does this in the GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam but then later in the GF13-017NJII God Gundam. The later arguably being one of the most powerful units in the entire Gundam Fight.
If G Gundam sounds a bit off the beaten track when it comes to Gundam, that’s because it really is. It was handled by the very capable and pathos driven Yasuhiro Imagawa and he did a great job too. At the time it was greeted with a fair amount of confusion from the fan base but over the years it has garnered a greater amount of appreciation, mostly down to Imagawa’s influence.
In terms of gaming, the God Gundam is a tricky one. Whilst technically part of a real robot mythos, it is resolutely a super robot in terms of abilities. As such it has been a staple in series like Super Robot Wars and even made it into the Another Century’s Episode games. It’s also one of the most powerful units in the Gundam Extreme Versus games and pretty much unstoppable in close combat (in the right hands admittedly).
As for toys, there have been a few over the years. The Gundam FIX and Mobile Suit In Action toys spring to mind, neither were all that great though. So when Bandai announced a Robot Damashii toy, we were very happy to hear that. Mainly because the figure demands a great deal of articulation to get the acrobatic nature of its poses right. In that regard Bandai have not disappointed!
Toy: Robot Damashii God Gundam
Price: 4,080 yen
Size/Weight: 22.1 x 19.6 x 4.6 cm / 200g
The design itself is quite slender and lithe, so this figure has interpreted that accordingly. This means a lot of the emphasis has gone on the efficacy of the joints in regards to advanced posture. Coupled with a good sculpt and very fine detailing, as per other recent Robot Damashii figures, means you end up with a very striking and sturdy toy.
Gimmicks and options are a little thin on the ground and many of the cooler aspects are being sold separately in a webshop exclusive bundle. The base set comes with beam sabers and the parts required for Hyper Mode and God Finger. Bar that though, it is pretty bare bones and you’re basically just getting the figure for the price.
That said what you are getting is of a very high quality throughout and it is arguably one of the nicest God Gundam figures we have ever played with. If you don’t mind the barebones loadout then this is definitely worth picking up. Not only for G Gundam fans but also just to see how far and advanced the new Robot Damashii figures have become.
