News: SD Gundam Generation 3D Site Update

The upcoming SD Gundam Generation 3D received a site update a few days ago, with some new in-game movies as well as some new unit updates. The latter was entirely from Gunpla Builders however, pictured above, so make that what you will. The in-game footage looks good though and whilst we’re obviously unable to judge the usage of 3D, the core graphics look solid. Admittedly they aren’t as shiny as SRWZ2’s, but nothing really is to be fair. We’ve included the original full length PV below though.

Updated: Game Watch has a nice new update on the game too.

As announced at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, SD Gundam Generation 3D is still on track for its December 22nd release date. The official site has also been kept up to date, with the new “Archive” section showing off the roster of series the game will feature. Of note are the addition of the upcoming Gundam AGE and Gunpla Builders. Much like the Super Robot Wars games, this series is unsurprisingly solely focused on Gundam. In all honesty, we’re not overly fond of the SD Gundam games but this does look suitably nice and since playing through Gundam The 3D Battle we have a hankering for some more 3D Gundam gaming.

News: Zone of the Enders 3DS hinted at

In a recent tweet by Hideo Kojima, he says “Found this at Omori-kun’s desk. What’s this?” and then links to the above picture. Despite the Revoltech Jehuty in the foreground, the text in the background does intimate that a 3DS Zone of the Enders game could be on the cards. As for who Omori-kun is, it’s more likely to be the developer that worked on a large number of Kojima’s games, rather than the animator who shares the same name. Either way, this is interesting news and makes more sense from a development cost point of view considering the limited popularity of the series. In that securing the large investment to fund a full blown 360 or PS3 game without the ability to guarantee a decent return, based on the prior sales of the games in the series, means that a 3DS port could be more viable in terms of the initial funding required.

Famitsu has two pieces (here and here) about the upcoming Gundam The 3D Battle on the 3DS. The first covers the various grunt units in the game and the second shows the more flamboyant mobile suits, with the Hi-Nu Gundam (pictured above) being notable. The latter article also covers the re-use of the sub flight system from the PSP games, this allows mobile suits to fly pretty freely across the levels. To be honest, we’re not overly wowed with what we’ve seen thus far but the whole 3D setup may make all the difference on its release on the 24th March.

4Gamer has some nice new screenshots and coverage for the forthcoming Gundam The 3D Battle on the 3DS. From various shots of classic Universal Century Gundam mecha, to the news about how the StreetPass system will work. Specifically, that it will allow players to swap mobile suits and pilots with one another, with the former appearing as enemies in missions. All this can be tracked in the MyRoom menu screen, as well as your preferred attacks. In addition to all this, the game will also have a new health setup. In that, damage inflicted can be recovered if subsequent impacts are avoided for a short time. However, there are attacks that bypass this system to incur pure damage. It’s basically the same kind of health regeneration seen in most modern day (Western) shooters, so it’s inclusion here is an interesting one.

The upcoming Nintendo 3DS exclusive and Artdink developed Gundam The 3D Battle received a slew of more screenshots today over at 4Gamer. In addition, the game will also sport a WiFi data exchange setup where you can exchange your pilot and mobile suit data with other 3DS users whilst on the move. Whilst these shots aren’t exactly stellar on their own and of a lower resolution compared to their PSP Gundam Battle counterparts, we’re still holding out that the unique 3D setup of the handheld will sell the game better.

The near launch title for the 3DS, Gundam The 3D Battle has received its first promo video via the official site (shown below). It also turns out that this game is in fact being developed by Artdink and will be part of their ongoing Gundam Battle series. Whilst we weren’t impressed with the recent Gundam Assault Survive, the other games have been mostly excellent (with Gundam Battle Universe being notable). What does slightly freak us out though is the insanely large lock-on icon seen in this new game and whilst we get it’s meant to be in 3D you do feel they’ve overdone it a bit. It’s also painfully obvious that the game will re-use much of the same content seen in the PSP Gundam Battle games too, however we are happy to see that Gundam Unicorn will be represented in the game (which is at least something). Famitsu also has a selection of nice screenshots and it also seems that the cover art has been penned by Naochika Morishita yet again. The game is scheduled for a March 24th release at 6,090 yen.

What with Nintendo in the throes of a somewhat epic PR campaign for the upcoming release of their latest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. It turns out that Bandai Namco haven’t exactly been idle. Whilst we reported a good while ago that a Gundam game was planned for the launch of the system, not much was known as to what type of game it would be. Well, now it seems the aptly titled Gundam The 3D Battle will be something in the same vein as Artdink’s Gundam Battle series, but with the apparent improvement that the 3D will allow players to gauge enemy distances more accurately (though whether that’s actually the case remains to be seen obviously). Whilst the approach they’ve taken is not a bad one, we were more hoping for something cockpit based like the old Blue Destiny games on the Saturn as well as the more recent and suitably panoramic Senjou no Kizuna, as this would have intensified the field of view. The game will feature the narratives from Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam and Char’s Counterattack (the latter being pictured above). All said and done though, the game does remind us an awful lot of the PSone games that Bandai did back in the day for Zeta Gundam and Char’s Counterattack. In any case, the game will be released in Japan on March 24th for 6090 yen.

The newly announced Nintendo 3DS, which sounds suitably wondrous, is also getting some cool third party games too. Even Bandai Namco are jumping into the fray and offering new Gundam and Super Robot Wars games specifically for the handheld. From a Gundam perspective, if they go down the action route, we could have something pretty mindblowing on a 3DS. As for SRW, there’s not much scope for sight bending functionality – as the games are predominantly turn-based strategy orientated. Still, it’s nice to see that the 3DS will be getting a slice of mecha gaming in the near future.
