A few years back, we heard that something might happen this year to commemorate Virtual On’s 20th Anniversary. Many thought it to mean a new game would be announced and that it would be revealed at this year’s JAEPO. Sadly, nothing surfaced. What with SEGA’s widely documented troubles as well as the ominous shutting down of the various official Virtual On websites, it looks like this might be the end for the hugely influential mecha gaming series. We may yet hear something Virtual On related this year but don’t hold your breath. While the arcade industry is buoyant in Japan, SEGA have seen better days.
I think some skins in Border Break are the best we’re going to do 🙁
Border Break being an arcade title all but exclusive to Japan, that’s nothing.
It had a good run.
Damn…well, hard to believe it’s been 20 years since VO hit the arcades…still one of the greatest mech games ever made. Sadly, we won’t get BORDER BREAK over here (but at least we got the English version of the artbook).
Now that was a fighting game I could enjoy. It would be great to see a remaster of it or Oratorio Tangram (sp?) for one of the next-gen consoles. Any idea if there is a way to play Virtual-On with a PC?
There are already PSN and XBLA remasters available of the original Virtual On.
I see, thanks for the info. Looks I will need to figure out how to set up a Japanese PSN account though. Off to the internets!
Where is the game available on PSN? Japan?
Japanese PSN, yeah – https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/ja-jp/%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0/%E9%9B%BB%E8%84%B3%E6%88%A6%E6%A9%9F%E3%83%90%E3%83%BC%E3%83%81%E3%83%A3%E3%83%AD%E3%83%B3/cid=JP0177-NPJB00321_00-VIRTUALONOMG0000
I know that VOOT was on XBLA. I never saw the OG VO.
It was a Japanese only release.
Well, that would explain it. Still trying to figure out how an American console gets great Japanese games, but can’t seem to bring them all to America. Also, how the PS3 never got any of this stuff in America, when it’s a Japanese console in the first place. Maddening.
