Kotaku has posted a brief interview with team leader Khang Le at Adhesive Games, the developer making the just announced Hawken. Apart from the reassuring knowledge that the game will be very much real robot in focus, Le also cites the mecha designer Kow Yokoyama as a strong influence for the mecha in Hawken (with Maschinen Krieger, aka SF3D, being notable). Yokoyama is a very interesting mecha designer, as his work melds insect like organic shapes with very gritty industrial elements. He’s also no stranger to games, from the original mecha designs in Front Mission to those in Carnage Heart and Phantom Crash/S.L.A.I., with the latter being especially relevant in the case of Hawken. In any case, the more we hear about this game the more we want to play it.
Cacophanus is still alive, good for him.
Approved! Mecha games should be about mechs and not superhero-like machines that scratch-dash on their feet and boost around too much which is a load of bull. This game hits home the concept of how realistic and true-to-life a mech can be.
Yo make it sound as if realism is the only way to go.
So I guess all that flying and dashing in the demo was a big let down for you, huh?
I actually had Phantom Crash in mind during the trailer. Not only do the mecha look quite similar, but the setting–a run down city–also reminds me strongly of it. I’m really excited for the game not just because of the mecha design, but because the environments have also obviously had a lot of attention to them, where the city feels natural and chaotic at the same time, with lots of opportunities for interesting gameplay without it looking too much like an obvious multiplayer-ready map.
Wonder when MD is gonna update on the changes to the ACV website and the new screenshots as well as finish translating the interviews….
We already covered the changes to the ACV website and translated the interview at Gpara.

Sadly, I just read that Hiroshi Kakoi, producer on MACROSS II and an animator on MACROSS, died in the quake (can’t believe it’s been a week already…).
