The recently released Soul of Chogokin GX-49 Mazinger Z toy has been given a lovely bit of coverage over at R-Side. This is the recent re-design of the classic Mazinger Z utilising the now new God Scrander featured in Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z Hen. The main aspect of the new God Scrander is how it can transform around Mazinger Z to form a giant fist, known as the Big Bang Punch. Considering how epically potent this attack is in the series it will be interesting to see how Banpresto handle this in a forthcoming Super Robot Wars game (as the Mazinger series is a staple in terms of mecha its line-up).
Separately, R-Side has also covered the recent toy releases of the Big O and Devilfish, both of which were featured in Super Robot Wars Z.

The Big O hasn’t looked better. The attention to detail behind the chest plate makes the whole thing look immaculate. I never really gave it much thought before now, but a lot of the Big O’s features, such as the steam pistons in the arms, the car having a garage in the leg, and even the chain rope missiles probably gave some poor toy designer nightmares before breaking down and admitting he just couldn’t do it. Strange for that to happen with a Super Robot who is supposedly more realistic than most; most of its gimmicks are still more or less impossible to model in real life.
The Devilfish I never appreciated much in the actual series, but seeing it in video games and model kits after the fact have really engendered good feelings toward it in me. A few other mecha in Eureka 7 stole the show, I guess, and the Devilfish doesn’t get as much airtime as perhaps it should, but the design has really grown on me since.
That Big-O! figure is absolutely insane. But yeah, it’s a shame he doesn’t come with any of the gimmicks from the show. Still an impressive figure though.
